Resources for Writing - Writing Tips
Hi Y’all!
I’m Sarah, one of the co-authors of the Controversial Book Club. Today, I'm going to share some of my favorite writing resources with you! As an author, writing seriously or just for a hobby, everyone needs help sometimes.
Disclaimers: We are not sponsored by any of these sites. ALWAYS ask your parent's permission and do your research before using any of these sites or doing anything email-related :)
Here are some great resources:
1. Story Embers — This Christian site has a load of great articles, ranging from character growth tips to writing mentality help. They also have a great library of free resources, however, you have to submit your email to get them. You can also submit writing to them!
2. Kingdom Pen — This Christian website is similar to Story Embers, but also has a large article selection. They have many blog posts about writing style, themes, and much more! You can submit writings to these people too. They have their own resource list here.
3. Baby Names/naming sites — If you need to name some characters, baby naming sites are the places to go!
4. YouTube — YouTube can be a great place to find writer advice videos, but it is very easy to get distracted and you must be careful on the site. There are lots of good writing channels, dedicated for advice.
Here are some resources that require accounts:
1. Notion — This website is geared towards work and accomplishing goals, but it's a good alternative to Google Drive, plus, it's more versatile.
2. Spotify/other playlist-making sites — Making playlists for your stories, worlds, and characters is a helpful and fun way to inspire you to create!
3. Google Drive — This is a great place to store your writing and share it with a select few!
4. Campfire Writing — (warning, this site allows adult/mature content) This website is a story-creating platform. Quoted from one of our authors, Shaylee Husmann:
"Firstly, Campfire Writing is free (unless you choose to upgrade modules), and even then they're really reasonably priced, even if you purchase lifetime unlimited access. The thing I use it the most for is definitely their character module. I can create extremely detailed profiles for each character, complete with images, backstory, attributes, statistics, and even soundtracks. The site is particularly helpful for crafting fantasy worlds too. You can build locations, upload maps, create magic systems and species, as well as systems, religions, languages, and philosophies. All in all, it's a super helpful website, and one I use daily for every single one of my WIPs."
5. NaNoWriMo/other writing contests — If you are a very competitive person, then you should join a writing contest!
6. Pinterest — This site is great for gaining inspiration! You can access Pinterest without an account, but its uses are limited.
7. Youth Writers Workshop — (This site is not free) This is a community for young writers. Along with that, it is a workshop and class, teaching young writers how to follow their dreams.
I personally do not recommend most social media websites for resources.
I hope you’ve found this useful.
