AI for Unartistic Artists - Writing Tips

G’day, readers!

My name is Jack Cuison and I’m one of the authors for the Controversial Book Club blog! Today I will be sharing six of my favorite free AI text-to-image generators with y’all. All of these websites are free and I have ranked them all based on image quality, price, quantity, and more! So, without further ado, let’s explore some AI sites for unartistic authors (like myself!).

(Created by Copilot AI and upscaled by Img.Upscaler AI)

I’ve ranked the 6 free AI image generators below based on efficiency, image quality, generation quantity, and overall appeal. After experimenting with dozens of image generators online, these are the six best I discovered you can use for free (I know that Dall-E is a highly-rated AI, but it charges for credits so I haven’t included it.) Despite the low ratings for some of the listed websites, all of them scored 5 out of 5 stars compared to the average online generative AI.

6. Pixlr

★★☆☆☆ 2/5 Stars

Pixlr was the most recent AI I experimented with for this article, recommended to me by a friend. At first, I marveled at the many filters and styles one can apply to an image prompt. However, Pixlr only offers 20 credits for free, which is much lower than the average generative AI. Also, the photos Pixlr generated were poor quality, inaccurate, and somewhat cursed. I feel like 2 stars may be too much to give Pixlr, but the AI could work for concept art or experimenting with your ideas, just not for anything worth posting or using for commercial use. So considering the quality of the photos and the quantity it can produce for free, I think Pixlr belongs in sixth place for this ranking; however, these are the six best AIs of hundreds across the Internet, so Pixlr actually isn’t as bad as it seems in comparison to your average AI.

5. Canva

★★★☆☆ 3/5  Stars

If you don’t already know what Canva.com is, it’s basically a great platform for creating online posters, mock-ups, book covers, wallpapers, and more as well as an image editor. I use Canva very often for many things, including the occasional blog post cover, but I only recently discovered that Canva has a built-in AI image generator app called “Magic Media” that one can use in any design for anything they want. You can select different styles and receive a decent amount of 50 overall free credits. There is a limit to how many words your description prompt can be, but the results are stunning.

All images generated by Canva’s generative AI are free for personal and commercial use. You can also upgrade to a paid plan to receive even more credits. While there are slight inaccuracies in generated images occasionally, I think Canva is deserving of 3 stars considering the high quality and large generation quantity of their AI images.

4. Fotor

★★★☆☆ 3.5/5  Stars

(Sorry the symbols are off. There’s no half-star symbol I could insert, but the ranking is 3.5 out of 5 stars.) Fotor is an image editor website, and their AI image generator is the first one I started using and was my go-to for a while before I discovered the others on this list. Compared to most AI image gens, Fotor deserves at least 5 stars; it only scores lower when compared to the others I’ve listed.

Now, at first glance, Fotor only seems to offer 8 free initial credits, but it actually offers much more when you click the little gift box icon next to the number of credits you have (see the above photo). There are ways to earn daily credits as well as share links you can send to your friends for both of you to receive 10 credits. Another questionable strategy I always use (I hope this is legal) is creating accounts using fake emails, which is possible because Fotor doesn’t ask to confirm your email like other image generators.

Overall, Fotor has decent image quality and probably the greatest generation quantity if you use the suggested strategies. I would highly recommend Fotor for concept art and personal use, but commercial use might be a step too far. However, I do believe Fotor is very deserving of the ranking I’ve given it, perhaps even higher.

3. Gencraft

★★★★☆ 4/5  Stars

Another recent discovery, Gencraft AI generates some of the highest-quality images I’ve ever seen, with almost 100 percent accuracy. Had this list been rated by quality, Gencraft may have earned first place. However, since I’m judging by the overall experience, Gencraft’s measly 5 daily credits earn it the bronze rather than gold. Still, if you’re not generating images in bulk, Gencraft is a perfect generative AI that provides outstandingly high-resolution images for free downloading. Also, Gencraft advertises their paid plan, which offers almost unlimited daily credits. Whether you have a budget or not, Gencraft can bring your ideas to life in stunning AI photos.

2. OpenArt

★★★★☆ 4.1/5  Stars

OpenArt, like Gencraft, generates some of the most outstanding images for free. But unlike Gencraf, this generative AI offers 50 overall credits (though it glitched on my laptop and let me generate dozens of photos without withdrawing a single credit!). The OpenArt website also offers a myriad of other features, like image editing, face swap, and more. The only downside to their image generator, which almost puts them below Gencraft, is that it takes fifteen seconds to over a minute to generate images. This can be a major con more or less for different people. I didn’t have a problem waiting because the beauty of the generated images is worth it. However, the more pictures you generate, the longer it takes, which is why it only scores 4.1 out of 5 stars on my list.

1. Copilot (by Bing)

★★★★★ 4.9/5  Stars

Now, I can’t remember how many boosts (see the lightning bolt icon in the above photo) Copilot offers, but I do know that Copilot generates beautifully accurate and high-resolution images for free, creating four images for only one credit! Considering the image quality and generation quantity, I find it safe to say that Bing’s Copilot AI is the best AI image generator you can use for free. Also, if you use a Windows device, Copilot AI is built in, so you don’t even have to create a separate account. The only reason I gave Copilot 4.9 stars instead of 5 is because there are limited boosts (I barely know what they do anyway. If you do, leave a comment!).

Well, those of six AI image generators you can use for free right now! I hope you found this post helpful. 1. So far, Copilot is really the only one listed I use. I tried out Pixlr I think, but I didn't care for it. The boosts on Copilot supposedly help it create faster. I say supposedly because I have no idea if that is actually true.

  2. Well, I actually AM a creative artist; I’m a polymer clay sculptor. But those sites look fun and I’m totally going to use them! Never have I used that kind of AI b4.

  3. hahahaha I just debated the author of this post about this very subject...

Guys AI art is bad, it is not AI art, and it is intellectual theft. Don't use it for commercial profit :P

    1. you just contradicted yourself. You just said AI art is not AI art, but that's exactly what it is. Are you still drunk?

    2. a) yes (jk) b) uhhh it was a typo. what I was trying to day was that AI "art" is not art, lol

    3. Naaaah, you’re definitely drunk. Only drunk people have typos that bad.

    4. you did it again with "day" instead of saying "say"

  4. I consider AI art to be art because it is a new creation. Isn't art inspired by another piece still its own piece?

    1. Art is made by a human being... Not a string of code which literally is only able to steal from people's art/photography.
A human is able to make something new. a string of code? nahhhh

    2. so what if it's a string of code? it's a NEW string of code and it satisfies my needs. so if you want, i'll admit it isn't "art" in that sense but it is a picture i requested that can't be found anywhere else and i find it useful

    3. J: Just curious but for which circumstances do you tend to use AI art? Like for when you right books?

      Delete
    4. yeah just to experiment with the appearance of my characters or fantasy worlds and stuff. my gmail wallpaper is a compilation of my WIP's characters ai pics

    5. oh I should use AI to create fake pics of myself (sorry Joanna) so I don’t’ have to use baby profile pics of myself. i'm like 3 or 4 in that one.

      Delete
    6. *remember, I specifically said its not okay to use ai art for specifically commercial profit/making money off of it

also jack if you want a unique piece of art go commission someone, its actually lowkey easy to find digital artists who dont charge hundreds of dollars ;)
you might even find someone who does art for free

    7. ...or create the art yourself... *cough*

    8. like have you ever heard of these things called paper and pencil? They are pretty cheap instruments. You use them to write and draw.

  5. oh and did I mention that AI threatens to make creators lose their jobs?

  6. I think AI art is great for inspiration. It's also great if you are trying to make an image you couldn't do with your current skills. Remember that beautiful AI image that popped up during CWW of Bortus eating a banana? A real human probably couldn't recreate such an uncanny masterpiece.
